  5 Stars from 1 Reviews

Description

The challenging Run with the Horses Marathon course is run on mainly improved, graded dirt roads.

The course starts at Expedition Island at an elevation of 6,100 feet. The first two miles are run on paved city streets and the paved Green belt along the river. The route then travels on the Flaming Gorge Way, turns onto Wild Horse Canyon Road where the course surface changes to graded dirt road.

Once on the Wild Horse Canyon Road, runners climb up the canyon for 2 miles to the top of White Mountain at 7,300 feet. Runners then continue along the rolling hills up the elevations of 7,500 feet. The course then returns to the start/finish line.

The elevation of the course is between 6,000 - 7,500 feet which may cause challenges for some runners.

Review

The first few miles were the hardest part of the race, but I most say that it was beautiful to see the sun rise between the canyons, it made it a lot easier.

Once you get to the top expect rolling hills on a gravel road with beautiful views of the canyons and HORSES, you actually get to run with HORSES!!! It was wonderful to see them run in the distance, hear them neigh, I was lucky to see them up close, they are magnificent!

The race is so well run, it is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the volunteers are AMAZING, there are water stations every two miles, well stocked with EVERYTHING you may need and more.

Unique medals for all finishers, special awards for top finishers, division and age groups.

This is a great race, you will not be disappointed.

Also, if you like to hike, there are plenty of places to do so in Green River, Rocks Springs and a few hours drive from Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.

Race Tips

The course is out and back, I will suggest to include hills in your training program, it definitely will pay off there.

The course is mainly dirt and some small gravel, once you are atop there will be some rolling hills, you can make up some time going downhill for about five miles before the end of the race.

When I ran there were no spectators but I didn't need them, the astonishing views were all I needed to keep me going.

Logistical Tips (Hotels, Restaurants, Parking, Discounts, etc.)

The Run with the Horses website has all the information necessary to make the trip a great success, that is what we use, the only hiccup we encountered was that our flight from Denver to Green River was cancelled, we were able to drive there but it cut our time the day before the race, it all worked out in the end.
